A tragic case from Flint has taken a major legal turn after a groom admitted responsibility in the death of his groomsman on his own wedding day.
Groom Pleads No Contest
James Shirah, 24, has pleaded no contest to second-degree murder along with other charges, including driving with a suspended license and leaving the scene of a deadly crash.
Prosecutors say Shirah deliberately struck his groomsman, Terry Lewis Taylor Jr., 29, with an SUV after an argument just hours after the wedding ceremony.
What Happened on the Wedding Day
According to investigators:
- The incident occurred on August 30, 2024
- An argument broke out between Shirah and Taylor
- Shirah allegedly used his vehicle to hit Taylor
- Taylor later died from his injuries
The shocking event turned what should have been a joyful day into a tragedy.
Bride Also Faces Charges
Shirah’s bride, Savanah Collier, 23, was also charged in connection with the case.
Authorities claim she did not cooperate with the investigation. She has since:
- Pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact
- Requested consideration under a law that could allow her record to be cleared if she completes probation successfully
Sentencing Ahead
Both individuals are awaiting sentencing:
- Shirah is expected to be sentenced on May 11
- Collier’s sentencing is scheduled for May 26
Shirah could face a life sentence, as no agreement was made regarding his punishment.
