A peaceful snorkeling trip off the coast of Hawaii turned into a shocking and violent incident, leaving passengers and crew shaken. What was meant to be a relaxing day at sea quickly became a life-threatening situation for the boat captain.
What Happened During the Snorkeling Tour
The incident took place on April 16 during a three-hour snorkeling trip near the Kona coast. According to police, a fishing boat returned to Honokōhau Harbor after a violent attack onboard.
Authorities say Avery Nissen, a 21-year-old man from Kansas, allegedly attacked the boat captain without warning while they were still at sea.
Details of the Alleged Attack
Reports suggest that while other passengers, including Nissen’s family members, were snorkeling in the water, he stayed back on the boat.
As the vessel headed back toward the harbour, the captain — identified as Stan Lurbiecki — said the suspect suddenly grabbed a knife from the boat’s kitchen area.
He then allegedly stabbed the captain multiple times. The injuries included:
- A stab wound to the lower abdomen
- Cuts to the head
- Injuries on the hands, likely from trying to defend himself
Despite the sudden attack, other passengers quickly stepped in and managed to stop and restrain the suspect.
Captain’s Condition and Response
After the boat returned to shore, the injured captain was rushed to Kona Community Hospital.
Doctors treated him for serious injuries, and he reportedly required blood transfusions. Thankfully, he is now in stable condition.
The captain later described the incident as completely unexpected and shocking.
Arrest and Charges
Police arrested Avery Nissen at the harbour shortly after the boat arrived. He is now facing several serious charges, including:
- Attempted second-degree murder
- First-degree assault
- Second-degree assault
He is currently being held on a bail amount of $1.57 million and is expected to appear in court soon.
Motive Still Unknown
As of now, authorities have not found any clear reason behind the attack. Investigators are still trying to understand what led to such sudden violence in what appeared to be a normal outing.
