A decades-old murder case in New Jersey has finally seen a breakthrough, with the arrest of a man already linked to another long-running disappearance. Authorities say advances in DNA technology helped solve the case after nearly 36 years.
Arrest in Cold Case Murder
Robert William McCaffrey Jr., 54, was arrested in Manteo on April 10.
According to the Vernon Township Police Department, he has been charged with:
- First-degree murder
- First-degree kidnapping
- Second-degree burglary
He is currently being held in custody while awaiting extradition to New Jersey.
What Happened to Lisa McBride
The victim, Lisa Marie McBride, was 27 when she disappeared on June 23, 1990.
She was last seen entering her home in Vernon Township around 2 a.m. after a night out.
Later that morning:
- She did not answer phone calls
- A family member checked her home
- Signs of forced entry were discovered
Police found:
- A cut telephone line
- Damage to a window screen
- Evidence suggesting a struggle
Discovery of Her Remains
Months later, her body was found in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.
The case remained unsolved for decades.
Breakthrough Through DNA
In 2022, investigators reopened the case and exhumed McBride’s remains for new forensic testing.
Authorities say:
- Advanced DNA technology played a key role
- New evidence linked McCaffrey to the crime
- Investigators continued working the case over the years
Link to Another Case
McCaffrey is also connected to the disappearance of his wife, Gayle McCaffrey, who went missing in 2012.
In that case:
- He reported her missing after an argument
- A supposed farewell letter was later proven fake
- He was convicted of obstruction of justice
- He served time and was released in 2023
Gayle McCaffrey has never been found, and her case is now being treated as a homicide.
Ongoing Investigations
Authorities continue to investigate both cases.
They are asking:
- Anyone with information about Lisa McBride’s murder
- Or Gayle McCaffrey’s disappearance
…to come forward and assist in the investigations.
This case shows how modern forensic technology can bring new life to old investigations. After decades without answers, Lisa McBride’s case is finally moving toward justice. At the same time, the unresolved disappearance of Gayle McCaffrey remains a painful mystery, with investigators still searching for answers.
