Baseball at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park — commonly known as “The Joe” — is taking on a new look this weekend as Banana Ball arrives in downtown Charleston, drawing large crowds and a festive atmosphere.
Charleston Native Returns Home
One of the standout moments came from Jalen Vasquez, a North Charleston native, who returned home to play in front of a hometown crowd.
Vasquez, a former Fort Dorchester High School standout, is now playing infield for the Indianapolis Clown, one of the teams participating in the Banana Ball tour.
A Unique Baseball Experience
Banana Ball, known for its fast-paced, entertainment-driven style, has gained popularity for blending baseball with fan-focused spectacle.
Vasquez said the experience during his first month with the team has been “crazy,” highlighting the excitement of playing in sold-out stadiums alongside former professional players.
Playing in Front of Family and Fans
Despite initially having only two tickets for the game, Vasquez managed to secure more than 50 tickets so family, friends, and supporters could attend his homecoming.
The weekend marks a full-circle moment for the local athlete, who once played in the area and is now performing in front of young fans from his own community.
Growing Popularity of Banana Ball
The arrival of Banana Ball in Charleston reflects the growing appeal of the alternative baseball format, which continues to draw large audiences and bring new energy to ballparks across the country.
