An Idaho man will spend decades in prison after shooting a bystander who authorities say was attempting to protect a woman during a violent altercation.
Sentencing and Charges
Logan Dakota Stephens, 25, was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with a minimum of five years to be served before he is eligible for parole, according to the Bonneville County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
The sentence follows his guilty plea to aggravated battery, with an enhancement for the use of a deadly weapon.
Altercation Escalates in Alleyway
The incident occurred on June 30, 2024, near a parking lot on North Capital Avenue in Idaho Falls.
Authorities said Stephens was walking with two women when a confrontation broke out between them. Video footage later showed Stephens pushing one of the women to the ground multiple times during the dispute.
Bystander Intervenes
A 35-year-old man who witnessed the altercation stepped in, confronting Stephens and attempting to intervene. The situation quickly escalated into a physical fight between the two men.
As the confrontation moved into a nearby parking lot, gunshots rang out.
Victim Shot Multiple Times
Stephens fired multiple rounds, striking the man four times—twice in the abdomen, once in the thigh, and once in the arm.
The defendant later claimed he believed the man was reaching for a weapon, but authorities determined the victim had been holding a cellphone and was attempting to record the incident.
Victim Describes Lasting Impact
The victim survived but suffered severe injuries requiring multiple surgeries. In court, he described the long-term physical and emotional toll the shooting has had on him and his family.
He said he would never fully recover and that his children now live with ongoing anxiety about his safety.
Defendant Apologizes
During sentencing, Stephens apologized for his actions, acknowledging the harm caused.
The court ultimately handed down a lengthy sentence, emphasizing the seriousness of the violence and its lasting consequences.
