A 22‑year‑old groom, Nolan Dain Engel, is accused of shooting and killing his 21‑year‑old friend, Braden Uhlmann, during a bachelor‑party trip at an Airbnb cabin in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. Engel has been charged with one count of second‑degree murder in connection with the incident.
How the shooting happened
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) says the case began just before 1 a.m. on April 4, when McCurtain County deputies responded to a shooting at a cabin off Rockhill Circle, about 240 miles southeast of Oklahoma City. First responders found Uhlmann on the front porch with a gunshot wound to the chest; he was rushed to a local hospital but later died of his injuries.
OSBI says Engel confirmed he was at the cabin for his bachelor‑party trip with three friends. According to investigators, Engel told them he heard “knocking noises” and saw what he believed was a person’s shadow outside the front door. He then allegedly fired a single shot from a 9 mm handgun toward the door area. After the shot, Engel and another friend went outside and found Uhlmann lying on the porch, shot in the upper chest. It is not yet clear whether Uhlmann was armed at the time.
Engel’s statements and current status
Court records show Engel made “spontaneous statements” to arriving officers identifying himself as the shooter. No other injuries were reported at the scene. Engel was initially held in the McCurtain County Jail but has since been released on a $250,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court again on April 28 as OSBI continues its investigation with help from the McCurtain County Sheriff’s Office and the Hochatown Police Department.
