A tragic case from Lancaster has ended with a prison sentence for a man responsible for the death of an innocent bystander during a family gathering.
Court Sentencing and Charges
Steffen Tidwell, 31, has been sentenced to 8 to 20 years in prison after being convicted of voluntary manslaughter and illegal firearm discharge. The sentencing was delivered by a judge at the Lancaster County Court. In addition to prison time, he has been ordered to pay $8,000 as restitution.
What Happened That Night
The incident took place on August 20, 2021, during a family barbecue on Hebrank Street. What started as a normal gathering turned into a deadly situation after a heated argument broke out.
According to prosecutors, Tidwell got a handgun from his car during the dispute and fired multiple shots. One of those shots struck 26-year-old Jomar Almestica, who was not involved in the argument and was simply nearby at the time. He was taken to a hospital but later died from his injuries.
Different Versions of Events
During the trial, Tidwell claimed he acted in self-defense, saying he believed the victim was reaching for a weapon. However, prosecutors argued that there was no evidence to support this claim and that Almestica was not part of the conflict at all.
The jury ultimately rejected more serious murder charges but found Tidwell guilty of voluntary manslaughter.
Emotional Courtroom Moments
During sentencing, Tidwell apologised to the victim’s family and expressed regret for his actions. He admitted that he would have to live with the consequences for the rest of his life and said he hoped to become a better person.
However, the victim’s family shared their grief and pain in court. Almestica’s mother spoke about the deep loss and described her son as a caring and loving person. He was a father of three, and his children will now grow up without him.
Impact of the Incident
This case highlights how quickly a situation can turn violent and lead to irreversible consequences. A moment of anger resulted in the loss of an innocent life and has deeply affected multiple families.
