A heartbreaking case from Indiana has ended with a long prison sentence, highlighting the devastating consequences of child abuse and the importance of protecting vulnerable children.
Man Sentenced for Toddler’s Death
A 25-year-old man, Jesse Allen Sartin, has been sentenced to 35 years in prison followed by five years of probation for the death of his girlfriend’s 21-month-old daughter, Caroline Ruth Boggs.
The sentence was handed down by Judge F. Aaron Negangard after Sartin pleaded guilty to aggravated battery resulting in death.
The case has drawn attention due to the severe nature of the injuries and the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
What Happened to the Child
According to prosecutors, the incident took place on July 24, 2024, while Sartin was caring for Caroline. Authorities said he violently shook the toddler for around 20 seconds, causing serious brain injuries.
Caroline was first taken to a local hospital and later airlifted to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, where doctors tried to save her through emergency treatment and life support. Despite these efforts, she passed away on August 1.
Medical experts determined that her death was caused by abusive head trauma, commonly known as shaken baby syndrome.
Investigation and Evidence
Initially, Sartin claimed the child’s injuries were accidental, saying she had fallen after being knocked over by a dog. However, doctors quickly found that the injuries did not match that explanation.
Investigators later confirmed that Caroline was alone with Sartin at the time of the incident. During questioning, he admitted that he became frustrated while bathing the child and shook her.
Authorities also recovered a letter in which he described the moments leading up to the incident, further supporting the case against him.
Court Findings and Sentencing Factors
During sentencing, the court considered several serious factors. These included the child’s young age and vulnerability, Sartin’s role as a trusted caregiver, and the violent nature of the act. The judge also noted his previous criminal record and the fact that he was already on probation at the time.
Prosecutor Lynn Deddens described the case as a preventable tragedy, stressing that the child depended on adults for care and safety.
Impact on the Family
Family members described Caroline Ruth Boggs as a joyful and loving child. Her death has left a deep emotional impact on her loved ones, who continue to cope with the loss.
As part of his sentence, Sartin will not be allowed to have contact with minor children during his probation period after release.
