A man sentenced to prison after being shot by Hamilton County cops while throwing an axe

A man who was shot by Hamilton County sheriff’s deputies after throwing an axe at them has been sentenced to five years in prison. Robert Eldred pleaded guilty to five charges of attempted felonious assault.

Incident Details

The incident took place on Cambridge Avenue in Columbia Township in February of last year. Deputies were called to the area after receiving a report of a man chasing people with a baseball bat. When the deputies arrived, they tried to calm the situation down.

However, the body camera footage shows that Eldred threw an axe at one of the deputies and then charged towards another. Officials also stated that Eldred attempted to grab the deputy’s gun.

Use of Force

In response, the deputies used non-lethal force, including rounds and a Taser, but when these measures failed to stop him, they shot Eldred. He was hit in the back, and at some point, he was also shot in the hand.

The Hamilton County Prosecutor, Connie Pillich, confirmed that the deputies were justified in using their weapons.
