A 76-year-old man was arrested early Monday morning after allegedly firing a gun during a dispute with a neighbor, according to the North Charleston Police Department.

Zan Arnold Dantzler was charged with discharging a firearm within city limits and transported to the Al Cannon Detention Center following the incident.

Police Respond to Early Morning Call

According to a police report, officers responded just before 6 a.m. to the 2600 block of Ferrara Drive after receiving reports of an argument involving gunfire.

When officers arrived on the scene, Dantzler was identified as the suspect.

Dispute Between Neighbors

Police say Dantzler was taking out his trash when he accidentally stepped onto a neighbor’s property. The neighbor, who was standing on his porch, allegedly yelled at him.

Investigators say Dantzler responded by stating that he had a gun and would shoot. The neighbor reportedly told him to go ahead and shoot, escalating the confrontation.

Shots Fired Into the Air

According to police, Dantzler then fired his gun into the air. He later told officers that he discharged two rounds because he was afraid and could not clearly identify the neighbor due to poor eyesight.

Arrest and Charges

Authorities recovered the firearm from a trash can at the scene. Dantzler was taken into custody and charged with discharging a firearm within city limits.

The incident remains under investigation.
