A South Carolina family is pleading for answers after a wrong-way crash on Interstate 26 in North Charleston left two people dead and two others injured.
The head-on collision occurred Feb. 2 when a male driver entered I-26 traveling in the wrong direction, police said. The crash killed Tiheshaca Green and Nicholas Smith. Green’s husband, Virgle Green, and their daughter, Arya, were also in the vehicle and survived with serious injuries.
Virgle Green recalled seeing the vehicle approaching in their lane moments before impact. He said he warned his wife that the other car was in the same lane, and seconds later the vehicles collided head-on.
Survivors Recovering From Serious Injuries
Virgle Green said he suffered a broken right leg and fractured toes, while his daughter sustained spinal injuries and internal bleeding. Both continue to recover as the family copes with the sudden loss.
Describing the emotional toll, Green said the crash took everything from him in an instant. He said he is now focused on staying strong for his daughter and preserving their family traditions as they move forward.
Family Seeks Public’s Help
Matthew Yelverton, the attorney representing the Green family, said they are seeking information about Nicholas Smith’s whereabouts in the hours before the crash. According to Yelverton, Smith’s family spoke with him shortly before the collision and believed he sounded intoxicated.
The family is asking anyone who may have seen Smith Sunday night — particularly if he was playing pool — to come forward. They have created a website, Justiceforthegreenes.com, where members of the public can submit anonymous information.
As the investigation continues, the family hopes that additional details about what led to the wrong-way crash will provide clarity and accountability in the aftermath of the tragedy.
