Road closures downtown have been announced in advance of the 2026 Emancipation Parade.

Charleston’s annual Emancipation Parade commemorates 163 years since President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.

Event Details

The parade occurs from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on January 1, starting at Fishburne Street near Burke High School. It follows a route turning left onto Ashley Avenue, right on Sumter Street, right on King Street, left on Calhoun Street, right on Concord Street, and ends near Laurens Street.

Road Closures

Fishburne Street closes at 9 a.m. between Hagood and President Streets for setup. The full route closes in segments starting at 11 a.m., with disbanding by 12:30 p.m.

Traffic Impact

Vehicle access to nearby businesses and residences will be limited, but Charleston Police officers will assist with traffic and neighborhood entry.
