A community vigil is scheduled for Monday afternoon at Ralph M. Hendricks Park in North Charleston to honor 23 individuals who died at the Al Cannon Detention Center over the past decade. Organized by the Lowcountry Action Committee, the event from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. will feature name readings, testimonials, candle lighting, and calls for jail reforms.
Key Individuals Honored
Mary Brucato, 23, from Ladson died on August 11, 2025, from fentanyl intoxication, cocaine use, and medical neglect; her case is ruled a homicide under SLED investigation. D’Angelo Brown, 28, passed away three years ago due to alleged medical neglect, including denial of schizophrenia and bipolar medications, sparking a 2023 family lawsuit.
Broader Investigations
The U.S. Department of Justice launched a civil rights probe in November 2023 into the facility’s medical care, isolation practices, and treatment of inmates with psychiatric disabilities. Organizers highlight patterns of neglect and preventable deaths at the 1966-opened center.
