Kwanzaa festivities are taking place throughout the Lowcountry.

Kwanzaa, a week-long celebration of African and African American culture created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966, began on December 26, 2025, in the Charleston, South Carolina, Lowcountry area. Each day honors one of seven principles: umoja (unity), kujichagulia (self-determination), ujima (collective work and responsibility), ujamaa (cooperative economics), nia (purpose), kuumba (creativity), and imani (faith), culminating on January 1.

Key Events

  • International African American Museum: Hosts “Kwanzaa: A Community Celebration” on Saturday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., featuring interactive activities, storytelling, music, and creative expression to explore the principles.​
  • Gullah Geechee Family Foundation: 8th Annual Gullah Kwanzaa on Tuesday, December 30, at Charleston Visitor Center (1 p.m.–3 p.m.), free with African drum class, juicing demo, art class, storytelling, and drum circle.​
  • North Charleston Cultural Arts: “Kwanzaa: Heritage Reimagined” on December 30 (5 p.m.–9 p.m.) at Park Circle Community Building, including Harambee Dance Company performances, marketplace, and African American cuisine.​

These events highlight Charleston’s deep African American heritage, promoting reflection and community renewal.
