Detectives in Charleston County are looking for information regarding the 2020 James Island murder.

Nygel Covington, a 22-year-old from James Island, was fatally shot on December 20, 2020, along Secessionville Road in Charleston County, South Carolina. Robert Royale was also injured in the incident, found on a front porch after gunfire erupted into a garage where a known visitor had been present.​

Incident Overview

Deputies responded around 8:45 p.m. to the shooting on Johns Island, discovering Covington dead on a nearby dirt road and Royale wounded. A disguised gunman opened fire when the garage door was raised, prompting Royale to flee inside the home.​

Investigation Status

No arrests have been made due to insufficient evidence, and Charleston County Sheriff’s Office detectives continue seeking public tips four years later. The case remains unsolved as of December 2024 updates.
