On Monday, December 8, 2025, Star Gospel Mission (SGM) in Charleston, S.C., held a groundbreaking ceremony for Phase 1 of its Brighter Together Campaign, focusing on new transitional housing units for women and children experiencing homelessness.​
Project Scope
The initiative involves remodeling one home and constructing another to create at least 30 new beds, enabling up to 52 residents at a time in private family units for stays of two years or longer. Part of a $20 million effort backed by groups like Friends of Morning Light, it provides wrap-around support including case management to foster stability and independence.​
Community Impact
Charleston County School District reported 621 homeless students at the end of the 2024/2025 school year, with many in unstable situations like cars or motels; the program aims to address this by meeting families’ unique needs. Construction is expected to take 15-18 months, emphasizing dignity and momentum toward life goals, as stated by SGM Executive Director Dr. Marion Platt.​
