The Charleston County Public Library’s Main Library on Calhoun Street will close in 2026 for a full renovation expected to last about two years. During this time, a temporary facility will operate at 1142 Morrison Drive in the former International Longshoreman’s Association building, offering a smaller version of library services including fiction and non-fiction collections, computers, and children and teen areas with convenient bus access.

The renovated Main Library will feature a newly designed youth floor on the first level for ages zero to 18 and caregivers, while adult services—business innovation, adult books, and the South Carolina room—will move to the second floor. The upgrade aims to provide a state-of-the-art facility benefiting the community and patrons who rely on the downtown location.

The temporary site lease runs from January 2026 through December 2027, with library officials planning to notify the public about the Main Library’s closing date ahead of time. This renovation is the last set under the 2014 referendum for Charleston County libraries.
