Classroom Champions: Charleston County Staff want scrubs to teach medical occupations

Julian Mitchell Elementary School in Charleston, SC, hosts “Medical Monday” on the first day of each school week, featuring quarterly visits from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) for hands-on medical lessons tailored to each grade level. Students learn topics like the respiratory system, wearing scrubs to immerse themselves in healthcare careers and build excitement for STEM fields.

Scrubs Donation Drive

Librarian Edie Crooks launched a DonorsChoose campaign to provide scrubs for all students, as currently only some have access due to family affordability issues. This initiative helps every child, especially Black and Brown students, visualize themselves in medicine, addressing historical underrepresentation and fostering future planning. Donations are tax-deductible, with funds directly purchasing and shipping items to the school.

Student Impact

Fifth-grader Emeka Milling, whose mother Devon serves as literacy coach, calls it his favorite day and now aspires to be a doctor after MUSC sessions. The program aligns with school uniforms policy, allowing scrubs on Medical Mondays alongside options like Wellness Wednesdays for athletic wear. Mitchell Elementary, a Title 1 school in downtown Charleston, emphasizes community partnerships like this MUSC collaboration.
