Police report exposes differing reports of council members' fight at Utah bar

North Charleston City Council members Michael Brown Jr. and Nefertiti Brown were involved in a physical altercation at the Lake Effect Bar in Salt Lake City on November 21, 2025, during the National League of Cities Summit. Both filed police reports claiming assault by the other, with conflicting accounts detailed in a Salt Lake City Police report released on December 2. Due to public interest, the investigation is being reopened.

Michael Brown Jr.’s Account

Michael Brown reported that Nefertiti Brown approached him while introducing herself to a witness, whispering a profane comment about interference. He described attempts to de-escalate, followed by her poking him, pressing him against the bar, and kneeing him in the groin three times after he grabbed her sleeve. Brown initially declined charges but later inquired about pressing them on November 28 and alleged she threatened to have someone kill them.

Nefertiti Brown’s Account

Nefertiti Brown claimed self-defense, stating she invited Michael to the bar with supporting texts and moved away after the incident. She reported Michael brushing his hand across her face, grabbing her wrist, and digging nails into it, causing swelling, with possible video surveillance available. Brown does not plan to pursue charges but sought documentation, accusing Michael of political defamation.

Investigation Status

Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Greg Wilking described the case as unusual, confirming reports from both parties. Both council members addressed the incident at a North Charleston City Council meeting on November 25, with Michael invoking faith and Nefertiti denying character attacks. No responses to media inquiries about legal counsel were received as of the latest reports.
