Charleston, South Carolina – A new holiday tradition is taking root in Charleston’s newest downtown community park.
American Gardens will hold its first community tree lighting ceremony today at 5:30 p.m., welcoming both locals and visitors to start off the holiday season.
The free event will feature the lighting of a 30-foot live Fraser fir and the unveiling of the park’s classic Venetian carousel. According to park officials, over 150 crepe myrtles and magnolias will be illuminated, transforming the park into a glowing winter wonderland.
Rachel Potter, a singer and actress, will perform, as will the Charleston Symphony Orchestra.
Teresa Patterson of the Beemok Hospitality Collection, her daughter Shakeena White, a teacher at Meeting Street Schools, and granddaughter Ava White will participate in a special three-generation countdown leading up to the lighting event.
Guests may expect complimentary cookies and chocolate, as well as a colorful holiday market with seasonal goodies and local artisans. Organizers anticipate large numbers and a family-friendly ambiance when the carousel spins for the first time.
The celebration is free and open to the public. The entrance is located at 174 King Street.
