Berkeley County, South Carolina. — A conflict has broken out between parents and the Berkeley County School District over the removal of educational tools.
Sarah Kalil, a parent, argues that the district has banned instructional materials without explanation or teacher input.
“It began with our books in 2023,” Kalil added, saying that teachers must now get administrative approval for materials longer than a short narrative at least one month in advance.
Kalil voiced frustration, noting, “We’re blocking trusted learning tools while keeping distractions wide open,” and describing the situation as “less like leadership and more like censorship.”
Kalil stated that restrictions began with books and spread to a program called DISCUS and the educational news channel CNN 10.
“I’m hearing from teachers… they are just receiving a notice saying, oh, you can no longer use this, but they’re not necessarily given a reason,” she told me.
In response, the district indicated that no programs are prohibited, but that tougher guidelines are required to fulfill state criteria.
BCSD emphasized that all changes had been conveyed to principals, who are responsible for alerting their employees.
The district is looking for substitute resources and remains dedicated to following state teaching regulations.
