Attendance Policy Changes
Students are now allowed six parent-excused absences per year, up from previous limits, but the number of medical absences has been reduced from 10 to 8.​
The total number of excused absences is now 16, including state-regulated non-excused absences, with the goal of improving attendance and academic outcomes.​
Cellphone Policy
A new cellphone policy will be implemented in the second semester of 2025, restricting student use of electronic devices during instructional time to minimize distractions and promote focus in the classroom.​
School Safety and Security
The “Guardians of Our Schools Act” allows school boards to designate trained employees as armed school guardians for campus safety, starting in the 2025-2026 school year.​
These guardians must undergo specialized training and are subject to strict protocols regarding firearm storage and use.​
The district continues to update campus safety practices, including protocols for bullying, harassment, and coordination with local law enforcement.​
Parent and Family Engagement
Horry County Schools emphasizes parent involvement through regular communication, family workshops, and opportunities for parents to participate in school planning and decision-making.​
