Florida Deputy, 27, Fatally Shot While Responding To A Car Crash: 'He Gave the Ultimate Sacrifice'

A 27-year-old Florida deputy died while responding to an automobile accident.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) stated on Friday, Nov. 7, that one of its Kendall District deputies died after being “shot during an altercation.”

The officer, Devin Jaramillo, “responded to a traffic crash,” where he “was brutally attacked” and “murdered,” MDSO Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said during a press conference, according to CBS News and WBLT.

“He gave the ultimate sacrifice, his life, defending us, defending you, and we need to understand as a society and as a community that that is just unacceptable,” Jaramillo was told by Cordero-Stutz.

According to CBS News, when the deputy arrived to the traffic incident, a scuffle ensued, and Jaramillo was shot.

According to the publication and the Miami Herald, the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His identity has not been made public.

According to the publications, police are currently interviewing a second person in connection with the event. Their identities have also not been revealed.

The inquiry into the incident is underway. The MDSO did not promptly respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

In a memorial to X, Cordero-Stutz described Jaramillo as a “valued member of our agency.”

“At just 27 years old, he served our community with professionalism, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others,” she said, honoring the officer with a photo of him in his uniform.

“My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow deputies during this difficult time,” she said. “Deputy Jaramillo’s legacy of integrity, compassion, and courage will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him.”
