A new notable museum opening in Mount Pleasant is the National Medal of Honor Museum at Patriots Point. This museum honors the heroes who have received the Medal of Honor, the highest U.S. military award, from the Civil War to present day. The striking museum design by Safdie Architects features three buildings totaling 107,000 square feet and will be located on the marshlands at Patriots Point, near the iconic Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and adjacent to the historic USS Yorktown.
The pentagonal concrete and glass structure will rise 128 feet, symbolically matching the height of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, which serves as a centerpiece of the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum nearby. The museum is designed as five projecting galleries clustering into a star-like form to represent the collective stories of Medal of Honor recipients.
Patriots Point also includes existing historic exhibits like the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier, USS Laffey destroyer, and other naval vessels. The new Medal of Honor Museum will enhance Mount Pleasant’s position as a destination for military history and heritage tourism. It offers visitors immersive historic exhibits about valor, sacrifice, and service that deeply connect to the military narrative of the region and nation.
This museum is poised to open in 2025 and will be a major addition to the cultural landmarks of Mount Pleasant for history lovers and those interested in military heritage.
