How Spartanburg Plans to Improve Public Safety After Recent Events

Spartanburg city and county officials have launched a series of coordinated efforts in 2025 aimed at improving public safety following recent events that raised local concern. These initiatives focus on modernized policing, road safety, community engagement, and public infrastructure preparedness.

City-Level Safety Improvements

The Spartanburg Police Department is expanding its community policing model, emphasizing stronger engagement with residents and business owners to reduce street-level crime and youth violence. Efforts include the integration of real-time crime data systems, installation of new surveillance and communication technologies, and expansion of youth outreach programs that partner with local social service providers to provide alternatives for at-risk individuals.

County-Wide Safety Action Plan

In early 2024, Spartanburg County Council adopted a comprehensive Safety Action Plan, which continues through 2025. This plan uses a data-driven approach to guide infrastructure improvements, prioritize traffic safety policies, and implement pedestrian-friendly redesigns in high-risk corridors. The county identified more than 50,000 crashes in the past five years—over 1,000 of which caused serious injuries—and is now addressing these issues through targeted enforcement and roadway design changes.

Traffic and Enforcement Initiatives

Spartanburg’s law enforcement agencies are participating in statewide and regional campaigns like Hands Across the Border and the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over initiative. These programs target impaired driving and speed enforcement through coordinated checkpoints with North Carolina and Georgia agencies, reinforcing safety during peak travel periods.

Public Works and Emergency Preparedness

Spartanburg’s Public Works Department is reinforcing its collaboration with public safety agencies to enhance road infrastructure, drainage, and street maintenance, ensuring that the physical environment supports safer transportation and emergency access.

Altogether, these coordinated programs—combining technology upgrades, traffic management, and community-centered policing—represent Spartanburg’s strategic framework for restoring public confidence and strengthening safety across the city and county in 2025.
