THE TROPICS: Depression formation over the Caribbean is expected this week

Charleston, South Carolina – The National Hurricane Center is tracking a system that they believe has the potential to create the season’s next tropical depression in the coming days.

Invest 98, a tropical wave, is now over the eastern Caribbean Sea. Forecasters predict it is causing a concentrated region of showers and thunderstorms.

The system is heading west at 15 to 20 mph toward the middle Caribbean Sea and is forecast to slow during the following few days.

Environmental conditions are predicted to improve in the next days, allowing a tropical depression or storm to emerge.

Regardless of how things evolve, heavy rains and strong winds are expected to commence across parts of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao in the coming days.

The possibilities of this system developing into a tropical depression within the next two days are around 50%. Chances for the coming week are about 80%.

First Alert Meteorologist Lexie Horvath stated that, while the chances are never zero, this system is unlikely to affect the United States.

If the system develops into a tropical storm or more, it will be named Melissa.

Nestor, Olga, and Pablo are the next names on the tropical cyclone list for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, following Melissa.
