12-Year-Old Girl Injured While Protecting Another Child During Minn. Catholic Church Shooting Speaks Out: I'm 'Angry'

Lydia Kaiser, a 12-year-old girl who was among the dozen or so persons injured in the Minneapolis Catholic Church shooting, which killed two others, is speaking out.

Lydia expressed her gratitude for the ongoing outpouring of love in an Oct. 16 post on a GoFundMe site set up to aid her recuperation.

“I’m okay,” the child wrote. “I’ve been allowed to return to school which is great because I missed my friends and it was hard to miss out on so much.”

Lydia Kaiser, a 12-year-old who was shot in the head during the Catholic school shooting, has spoken up.

Lydia, who was injured while defending a younger kid at a mass at Annunciation Catholic Church and was later taken to the hospital in “very serious condition,” said she is still dealing with the aftermath of the day.

“I still can’t play sports, but I’ve been cheering on my friends and running the scoreboard,” she told us. “I get tired more than usual but I’m not really getting headaches like I used to.”

Lydia’s relatives posted new images of her on the GoFundMe page. The 12-year-old was seen in the photos with short hair on the left side of her head, where she was injured during the shooting and later underwent surgery.

“My hair is starting to grow back and it looks fuzzy where they shaved it off for my surgery,” she posted on Instagram. “I’m hoping it grows back before I start high school.” I don’t think it’ll grow that quickly, however.”

The preteen also stated that this year will be her “last” at Annunciation. She described it as a place “like my home and my family,” and she intends “to do everything I can to enjoy my 8th grade year.”

“Thank you so much for your prayers and all of your love and support,” she said on the GoFundMe page, which has raised over $423,000 so far. Lydia was one of the children highlighted by Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, in a post-attack statement on X.

Lydia, whose father is a gym teacher at the school, was in the acute care unit after the shooting and was “going in the right direction,” she said.

The attack harmed 18 persons in all, 15 of whom were minors.
