Myrtle Beach, South Carolina On Saturday, Myrtle Beach police detained a lady for brandishing a firearm while driving by a “No Kings” demonstration at Chapin Park.
Police spokesperson Randolph Angotti confirmed the incident to News13 on Saturday afternoon, but no other information was immediately available.
It was the third mass mobilization since Trump’s return to the White House, and it occurred against the backdrop of a government shutdown that has closed federal programs and services while also testing the core balance of power, as an aggressive executive confronts Congress and the courts in ways that protest organizers warn are a step toward authoritarianism.
Events took place all day in Conway, Florence, and Myrtle Beach.
Republicans attempted to depict demonstrators as far outside the mainstream and a primary reason for the government shutdown, which is currently in its 18th day.
From the White House to Capitol Hill, Republican leaders referred to them as “communists” and “Marxists.” They claim that Democratic leaders, including Schumer, are tied to the far-left wing and are eager to keep the government shut down to placate those liberal forces.
“I encourage you to watch — we call it the Hate America rally — that will happen Saturday,” said Louisiana House Speaker Mike Johnson.
More than 1,500 people gathered in Birmingham, Alabama, invoking and publicly recognizing the city’s protest history as well as its key role in the Civil Rights Movement two generations prior.
“It just feels like we’re living in an America that I don’t recognize,” said Jessica Yother, a mother of four. She and other demonstrators said they felt united by gathering in a state where Trump received over 65% of the vote in November.
