Charleston announces midnight lane closures and traffic interruptions due to roadwork

Charleston, South Carolina — Several lane closures are planned for downtown Charleston beginning Sunday night, Oct. 19, when contractors begin asphalt milling and paving work, city officials reported.

From Sunday to Thursday, work will take place nightly, beginning at 7 p.m. and ending at 6 a.m.

The timetable goes as follows:

Sunday, October 19th: East Bay Street at Chapel Street, East Bay Street at South Street, and Meeting Street at Line Street.
Monday, October 20: Finish Meeting Street at Line Street, if necessary, then work between East Bay Street and Cumberland Street.
Tuesday, October 21: Work continued along East Bay Street and Cumberland Street.
Wednesday, October 22: Calhoun Street at Ashley Avenue; Calhoun Street at Smith Street; and Broad Street at Barre Street, where a detour will reroute traffic down Beaufain Street beginning at 9 p.m.
Thursday, October 23: Finish remaining work, if necessary.
Drivers are advised to slow down, use caution, and obey all traffic control signs and directions when passing through the affected regions.

The City of Charleston, in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and Mastec-Civil, has also announced a series of nightly lane closures downtown, which will begin this week for asphalt paving and ongoing bridge construction.

MasTec will close U.S. 17 northbound near the Albemarle Road intersection, continuing for roughly a half-mile north, and concluding near the Lockwood Boulevard exit. The closure will be from 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, until 6 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, as part of the Ashley River Crossing bridge construction project.

Additional lane closures in downtown will begin on Sunday night, October 19, for asphalt milling and paving. Work will take place nightly from Sunday to Thursday, beginning at 7 p.m. and ending by 6 a.m. the following morning.
