ISLE OF PALMS, South Carolina – The Isle of Palms Fire Department responded to a gas leak at Wild Dunes Resort on Beachwood East on Sunday morning. Officials from the department stated they were able to secure a portable propane tank that had come undone.
Homeowner Jimmy Bernstein stated that the issue, as well as other damage to the front side of the home, was caused by high tide. Neighboring properties along that stretch also suffered significant erosion, leaving heaps of rubble and sections of areas facing the water completely destroyed.
Bernstein said he could smell the gas seeping out when he discovered the misplaced tank this morning. AmeriGas arrived this afternoon to remove the tank.
“I awoke at five a.m. to see that the back of my house had entirely worn away. “I was very concerned because the propane tank was leaking gas in the ocean,” Bernstein explained.
Bernstein’s house is still barricaded with boards, and enormous sandbags flank the yard, but he says it won’t last. The Bernsteins are urging the government to grant an emergency order allowing them to lay down boulders to safeguard their houses and safety. Both expressed anxiety for the rest of the week as tide forecasts increase in height.
