Charleston, South Carolina – According to the National Hurricane Center, there is a higher likelihood of a low pressure area developing in the tropical Atlantic.
As of Sunday, the system, which is coupled with a tropical wave, was producing a huge region of disorganized showers and thunderstorms several hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.
Weather conditions appear to favor development. It is now 70% likely that it will become at least a tropical depression in the coming week, up from 60% earlier on Sunday morning. There is a 50% risk of development over the next 48 hours.
Forecasters forecast it to become the season’s tenth tropical depression as it advances rapidly over the central tropical Atlantic into the Leeward Islands.
It is too early to say what impact, if any, it will have on the southeast United States.
If it develops into a tropical storm, it will be named Jerry.
