On Sunday, North Charleston saw hundreds of bikers join the 5th Annual Memorial Ride, a heartfelt event honoring those who lost their lives during the September 11th terrorist attacks. The ride, which has grown significantly since its humble beginnings, spread a powerful message of unity and prevention while celebrating the spirit of community.
Organizer Gary “G-Man” Goldman noted the impressive growth of the event. “This is the fifth annual ride and it has grown expeditiously,” Goldman said, reflecting on how the event started with fewer than 200 motorcycles just five years ago. This year, nearly 500 bikers from across the Lowcountry and beyond participated in the ride.
A Community Celebration
The Harley Davidson lot was alive with energy, filled with food vendors, live music, and a sense of community pride. Charleston County sheriff’s deputies engaged with attendees, while flags waved high to honor the service and sacrifice of those who protect the nation.
For many riders, the event wasn’t just about remembrance—it was about passing on lessons from the past to future generations.
Teaching History and Honoring Sacrifice
David Fleming, a rider, stressed the importance of educating younger generations about the sacrifices made by law enforcement and military personnel. “If we don’t do it, then who will?” he asked. “There’s a lot of frowning upon law enforcement and military, and it shouldn’t be that way. Old dogs like us need to pass it on.”
Charleston County Sheriff Carl Ritchie echoed Fleming’s sentiment, reminding attendees of the unwavering commitment of law enforcement. “Those who went to work that day didn’t know they weren’t coming home, but they took an oath to protect those who couldn’t protect themselves,” Ritchie said. “They should never be forgotten.”
Supporting Local Causes
Proceeds from the Memorial Ride will benefit Wake Up Carolina, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals break free from substance abuse and start new, hopeful chapters in their lives. The event not only honors 9/11 victims but also gives back to the community, supporting individuals in their journey toward recovery.
