BALTIMORE, Md. – If you’re traveling across Maryland and northern Virginia today, keep your umbrella handy — but don’t rule out a bit of sunshine by evening. A lingering drizzle and cloudy skies continue to hang over areas east of US-15, especially along the Delmarva Peninsula, but a clearing trend is slowly moving in from the west.
Slow Clearing from West to East
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, a weak low-pressure system is now moving offshore. This is allowing skies to brighten first west of I-81, including parts of western Maryland and Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. The clearing is expected to gradually shift eastward, reaching Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and other I-95 corridor cities by late evening.
What to Expect This Afternoon
Drizzle and damp roads will continue east of US-15 through the late afternoon.
Clearing skies will start west of Frederick, Hagerstown, and Martinsburg.
Temperatures will hold steady in the mid-60s to low 70s.
Overnight lows will dip into the 50s and 60s with lighter winds making it feel cooler.
Road Conditions and Travel Impact
Live traffic cameras show wet pavement from Annapolis to Martinsburg, with reduced visibility due to drizzle along the coast and in low-lying areas. Motorists should:
Use headlights during drizzle and cloudy periods
Reduce speed and increase following distance on slick roads
Stay alert for patchy fog in rural or wooded areas this evening
Conditions will improve along I-81 first, with sunshine possible just before sunset in those western areas.
Tonight and Tomorrow’s Outlook
Winds will calm down overnight, and skies will become partly cloudy, especially near the I-95 corridor.
Drier weather is expected to dominate Wednesday, with no major rainfall in the forecast.
More advisories could be issued if drizzle lingers into the Wednesday morning commute, but most models suggest a drying trend.
While today started off gray and damp for much of Maryland and northern Virginia, the atmosphere is slowly clearing from west to east. Expect continued drizzle and wet roads this afternoon, especially east of US-15, but look for possible sunshine before sunset in western parts of the region. Drier, calmer weather is expected to settle in overnight and into midweek — just in time for a more comfortable Wednesday commute.
