The Charleston County Sheriff's Office recalls a fallen deputy who died 11 years ago

September 8 marks the 11th anniversary of the tragic death of Deputy Joe Matuskovic, who was killed while responding to a call at a West Ashley apartment complex. On that fateful day in 2014, Matuskovic was shot through an apartment door by Michael Oswald, who also lost his life in the exchange of gunfire.

Lasting Tributes

In honor of his service, the intersection of Carriage Lane and Highway 61 was named after Matuskovic in 2017. Additionally, in 2023, his parents were presented with a Law Enforcement Medal of Honor on his behalf in a ceremony held at the CCSO Fallen Officer Memorial Garden, where his monument stands.

Solemn Remembrance

On the 11th anniversary of his passing, only Matuskovic’s monument was lit, serving as a reminder of his sacrifice and the lasting impact of his service to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office and the community.
