Charleston, S.C. — The NAACP Charleston Branch will host a crucial community meeting on Thursday, focusing on affordable housing in the area. The meeting follows a recent discussion by the Charleston Housing Authority on the city’s efforts to expand housing opportunities and support diverse, thriving communities.

Affordable Housing Strategy Overview

The city has set an ambitious goal of creating 3,500 affordable housing units by 2032. To date, 178 units have been completed, with more developments planned for various neighborhoods, including the peninsula, West Ashley, and Johns Island.

Publicly owned land is seen as a key resource in this strategy, with 888 publicly owned sites across more than 5,700 acres. These sites are viewed as prime opportunities for building affordable and workforce housing to address the growing demand.

Details of Thursday’s Meeting

The meeting will be held at the Emanuel AME Church Fellowship Hall at 110 Calhoun Street at 6:30 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend and engage in discussions about the future of affordable housing in Charleston.

Craig Logan, a housing strategist with the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, will be the keynote speaker, offering insights into the city’s affordable housing initiatives.
