Maryland Police Crack Down on Speeding and Reckless Driving in Baltimore County Work Zones

Baltimore, MD — Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police ramped up enforcement this week along Interstate 695 in Baltimore County, targeting drivers who ignored traffic laws in and around construction zones. The initiative was part of an ongoing effort to reduce speeding and protect both workers and motorists in high-risk areas.

The focused operation took place on Wednesday, involving officers from MDTA’s Central Command Detachment, Traffic Safety Section, and Logistics Division. The Maryland State Police also joined the high-visibility safety campaign.

Results of the Operation

The targeted enforcement led to:

137 traffic stops

254 combined citations, warnings, and repair orders

2 arrests of drivers with outstanding warrants

Authorities say these numbers highlight the seriousness of the issue and the need for continued vigilance from both drivers and law enforcement.

Protecting Workers and Drivers

Officials emphasized that active work zones are particularly dangerous areas, with road workers and passing vehicles often separated by only a few feet. The goal of the campaign was to curb reckless behavior, including speeding, aggressive lane changes, and distracted driving.

“These efforts supplement everyday patrols,” MDTA Police said, adding that more enforcement operations are planned throughout the year.

Important Reminders for Motorists:

Slow down when approaching or driving through work zones.

Follow posted speed limits — even if no workers are visibly present.

Stay alert and avoid distractions like mobile phones.

Be patient and give workers and other drivers plenty of space.

Report Dangerous Drivers

Motorists who witness reckless or unsafe driving on Maryland toll roads can contact MDTA Police Dispatch at 410-537-7911.

Law enforcement officials say public cooperation is key to preventing accidents and saving lives in construction zones.
