CHARLESTON, S.C. — As heavy rain continues to fall across downtown Charleston, the city is extending free parking hours at two downtown garages to accommodate those affected by the weather. The garages at the Charleston Tech Center (997 Morrison Drive) and 99 WestEdge (across from the RiverDogs Stadium, not the Publix garage) will remain open until 9 a.m. Sunday.

Flooding and Road Closures

Standing water has caused multiple road closures throughout the city, and additional closures are expected as more rain bands move through. Some of the heaviest rain could coincide with the 9 p.m. high tide on Saturday, which is expected to reach 7.6 feet or higher. This could result in flooding in areas that typically don’t experience such conditions.

Safety Precautions and Ordinances

City officials are urging residents to avoid travel when possible, especially with the rising tide and worsening weather. An ordinance passed last year prohibits driving or boating through flooded areas at speeds greater than 5 mph or in a way that causes waves, wakes, or damage. The Charleston Police Department is actively issuing citations to those who violate this rule.

Emergency Response Efforts

Mobile pumps are being deployed at key locations, and more than 60 flood-prone areas have been barricaded. The Charleston Fire Department has two high-water vehicles in service, with a third ready for deployment if needed.

With the flooding continuing, officials stress the importance of avoiding unnecessary travel and remaining vigilant as the weather conditions evolve.
