Charleston is offering free parking at two city garages this weekend as a cold front brings the potential for significant rainfall and flooding to the area. With forecasts predicting four to six inches of rain from Friday to Monday, the city is taking steps to help residents protect their vehicles from possible flood damage.
Potential for Flooding
The heaviest rainfall is expected to occur between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Friday, and again on Saturday afternoon through Sunday afternoon. Forecasters warn that low-lying roads in the area may become flooded, potentially making them impassable. The public is strongly advised not to drive through standing water, as it can be dangerous and unpredictable.
Free Parking at City Garages
In an effort to help residents safeguard their vehicles, the city is offering free parking at the following garages:
99 West Edge Garage (99 West Edge St.)
Charleston Tech Center Garage (997 Morrison Dr.)
Free parking will begin on Friday afternoon, and vehicles must exit the garages by 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 3. After 5 p.m. on Sunday, regular parking rates will apply. Vehicles parked before 4 p.m. on Friday or after the Sunday deadline will also be charged regular rates.
How to Use the Free Parking
If you plan to use the free parking, be sure to take a ticket upon entering the garage. City attendants will be available to assist with exits. If an attendant is not on-site, press the black assistance button to request help. When exiting, inform the attendant that you parked in the garage due to the flooding threat and provide your name and address.
Please note that this free parking offer does not apply to boats, trailers, or golf carts.
With the weather forecast predicting heavy rainfall and potential flooding this weekend, Charleston is taking proactive steps to help residents protect their vehicles. If you’re in need of parking, take advantage of the free parking offer at the designated garages before the weekend’s heavy rain hits.
