I don't want to go to Death Row: Police say a son who used a hammer to beat his mother and sought assistance from a gaming pal is charged with murder

A 24-year-old man from Texas, Robert Babin, is now facing a murder charge after allegedly attacking his mother with a hammer, leaving her with injuries so severe she later died. The case has shocked the Houston area, and court records reveal disturbing details of a violent family tragedy.

What Happened in the Attack

On June 11, 2025, police say Robert Babin struck his 61-year-old mother, Lisa Babin, multiple times with a hammer at their home on the 18700 Block of Holly Way in Harris County. When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they found Lisa barely breathing with serious head injuries. She was unable to speak due to the trauma.

Lisa fought for her life for nine days, but sadly passed away, leading to Robert’s charge being upgraded from aggravated assault to murder on July 29, according to court records.

Confession Sent Over a Gaming App

In a chilling twist, Robert allegedly confessed to the assault in a message sent over a gaming platform to a friend. According to court documents, he wrote:

“I just assaulted my mother with a hammer. I got angry. I don’t know what to do… She’s barely breathing. I don’t want to end up on Death Row.”

He also mentioned needing to destroy evidence and get rid of the hammer before police arrived. However, the friend didn’t see the messages until nearly two hours later, causing a delay in calling 911.

Police Investigation and Arrest

When questioned by deputies, Robert claimed he had left his mother at home “napping and unharmed,” and said he had no idea what had happened. However, his mother was found with severe head and body injuries, and she couldn’t speak due to the trauma.

Police believe Robert tried to hide the attack and cover up the evidence, but thanks to his friend’s call, they were able to respond and begin investigating quickly.

What Sparked the Attack?

Authorities believe the attack started after an argument between mother and son. Harris County Sheriff’s Office Major Ben Katrib said:

“There was some sort of verbal argument between the victim and her son. He became enraged and struck her with a hammer several times.”

Major Katrib also stated that Robert made efforts to conceal the crime, but the friend who reported the confession “did the right thing” by calling 911.

Current Charges and Jail Status

Robert Babin is now charged with murder and is being held in the Harris County Jail on a $350,000 bond. If his charge is later upgraded to capital murder, he could potentially face the death penalty.

This case is a tragic example of how quickly family disputes can turn violent, with heartbreaking consequences. A mother has lost her life, and a son now faces life behind bars. Thanks to the alertness of a friend who took a disturbing message seriously, police were able to respond. As the legal case moves forward, the community is left mourning a senseless act of violence that might have been prevented.
