Several fire personnel combat a Johns Island structure fire

A large structure fire on Johns Island, South Carolina, kept emergency crews busy Sunday afternoon as they worked to bring it under control. The St. Johns Fire District, along with several partner agencies, responded to the fire in the 3000 block of River Road, near Fields Farm.

Details of the Fire

When crews arrived at the scene, they initially discovered a fire outside the building. However, upon closer inspection, it was found that the fire had spread and consumed a barn-like structure. St. Johns Fire District’s Fire Chief, Ryan Kunitzer, confirmed the spread of the fire. The intensity of the heat, along with the location of the water hydrant, led to a large response, with more than 20 additional units called to assist.

Rapid Response and Support from Partner Agencies

The fire call initially started as an outside fire but was quickly upgraded to a full structure fire as the flames spread. Assistant Fire Chief Shawn Flanagan said the response involved a combined effort from several local and regional agencies. The James Island Fire Department, Charleston County EMS, Charleston Fire Department, Charleston County Rescue Squad, and Berkeley Electric Cooperative all played essential roles in the operation to contain the fire.

Containment and No Injuries Reported

The fire has since been contained, and fortunately, no injuries were reported. Crews worked diligently to ensure the situation did not worsen, and all necessary precautions were taken to keep both the public and emergency responders safe.
