Charleston International Airport has served the Lowcountry for nearly a century, and with it comes a multimillion-dollar expansion.
State and airport officials broke ground Monday on the West Gate Expansion project, which will include a new parking lot. South Carolina officials say the expansion is more than just an upgrade; it is a must-have to keep up with Charleston’s rapid growth.
The first phase of the parking lot will include 1,500 new parking spaces, with the second phase beginning in the spring of 2027 and adding 5,000 new parking spaces.
This is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Charleston County history.
Elliott Summey, CEO of Charleston International Airport, explained why the airport needs to expand. “When driving down International Boulevard, you know what kind of traffic you’re dealing with. We’ll have a brand new connector road dedicated specifically to this airport, which will be extremely important.”
Summey stated that today, they broke ground for four new gates on the west concourse, which will increase the airport’s capacity by 20%.
Charleston has grown rapidly since 1929, with each year’s passenger numbers setting new records. To meet this demand and influx of people, the expansion project was designed with travelers in mind, ensuring that the Charleston experience remains elevated for the next century.
Helen Hill, CEO of Explore Charleston, stated, “For the past 100 years, we have kept Charleston connected. And this incredible project will ensure we do it for the next century.”
The West Gate Expansion will include a new concourse with 40,000 square feet of passenger space. Featuring new restaurant and retail offerings, as well as new gates that will accommodate more direct and international flights than ever before.
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster stated, “This place is thriving; we have risen, and it is becoming stronger and stronger.” The Governor then asked the community for one favor: stick together, stay close to your friends, and always say that South Carolina is the best place in the world to live, work, and raise a family.
Leaders say they’re focused on staying ahead of demand and ensuring the airport can serve the community for years to come.
