North Charleston, S.C. — James Hilliard, a convicted felon, was arrested in North Charleston following a routine traffic stop near the Econo Lodge. The stop, which occurred during proactive patrols, led to the discovery of a firearm in his vehicle, resulting in charges related to unlawful firearm possession.
The Traffic Stop and Search
North Charleston police officers observed a vehicle committing a traffic infraction while conducting proactive patrols. This infraction led to a lawful traffic stop. During their interaction with the driver, officers noticed drug-related items in plain view, which provided probable cause for a search of the vehicle.
Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered a handgun hidden beneath the driver’s seat.
The Arrest
Further investigation revealed that the driver, James Hilliard, was a convicted felon, making him legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. Hilliard was immediately taken into custody and transported to the Al Cannon Detention Center.
