The murder took place on September 24, 2023, when Vendler invited Johnston for a hike in the Mill Stream Run Reservation. Vendler, who identified as male at the time of sentencing but was female during the crime, told Johnston it was a “surprise.” However, Vendler later admitted to police that the “surprise” was actually his plan to murder Johnston, noting that he deliberately left his cellphone behind to avoid being tracked.
Vendler and Johnston had been in a romantic relationship in the past. According to prosecutors, the two walked to a secluded area of the park, where Vendler shot Johnston in the back of the head. The body was discovered six days later, on September 30, 2023, by hikers whose dog led them off the trail into the woods, where they found Johnston’s remains.
